League of Ireland clubs launch the "Head in the Game" armband initiative.

On Thursday, the “Head in the Game” campaign announced that each captain in the SSE Airtricity League, First Division and Women’s National League will wear a special armband in May to mark mental health awareness month.

Head in the Game, a supporter-led mental health initiative, was created in September 2020 following the tragic passing of Dundalk FC videographer Harry Taffe. Six Dundalk supporters got together to create the campaign, which aims to “create a discussion and break down the stigma of mental illness”.

The campaign works closely with Jigsaw and Shine, two charities who do invaluable work in providing services and support to those who need it, and creating more awareness about mental health.

The campaign has gone from strength to strength in recent months. In March, newly promoted Drogheda United announced that they would be renaming their stadium to “Head in the Game Park” for the 2021 season. Local Councillor Joanna Byrne said at the time “I have seen young Drogheda fans with banners saying it’s ok not to be ok. I think it’s wonderful that young people are confronting the stigma of mental health, and I hope the renaming of United Park takes it a step further”.

Then in April, Head in the Game announced a partnership with Umbro to create a special jersey, with the profits going to Jigsaw and Shine. The limited edition purple and black jersey sold out within 24 hours. Umbro hope to drop another batch soon. The campaign has also sponsored a number of League of Ireland players this season. Following Thursday’s announcement, Chairperson Dean Arrowsmith said “We really hope this is a conversation starter amongst players, coaches, staff and fans. If it helps one person then it’ll have been worth it. Thanks to the FAI, clubs and captains for really getting behind it”.
